“An incredible album reminiscent of Lee Hazlewood.” (De Morgen)
Possibly – feel free to scratch out ‘possibly’ – the Belgian album of 2024: Leave Another Day by BRDCST fixture Milan W. (BE). The last three years, Milan Warmoeskerken shined at the annual CAN tribute at BRDCST next to theatre producer/musician Ferre ‘Sergeant’ Marnef. On each occasion, they completely remade CAN’s Holy Trilogy (Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi and Future Days).
This time, Milan W. himself will take centre stage with a debut that Boomkat crowned Album of the Year. HUMO described it as “The best Belgian album nobody’s listened to … A treasure trove of spine-chilling moments … A thrilling, serene and truly impressive solo debut.”
On Leave Another Day, Warmoeskerken unleashed the multitalented singer-songwriter within himself. On its influences, Pitchfork wrote: “The Cocteau Twins in their major-label phase, Swans’ acoustic period (The Burning World, White Light From the Mouth of Infinity), Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy’s hi-def solo work, and, especially, the Church’s Starfish, the Australian group’s jangling, psychedelic dream-pop opus. In places, Milan W.’s woozy drawl suggests Kurt Vile, if the Philadelphia guitarist had grown up on goth instead of classic rock.” They then add: “But none of the album’s reference points are exactly obvious, and the fact that people hear such radically different things in it speaks to just how unusual the record is.”
BRDCST: “What was your greatest musical moment of 2024?”
Milan W. : “I perform the songs from Leave Another Day live with Elko Blijweert and Martha Maieu, two musicians who I love to have around, both on and off stage. My greatest musical moment of the year? Finding these people, who I’ll get to spend even more time with thanks to the attention we got from Leave Another Day.”
